Our CDL Training Program
At Truck Driver Institute, our commercial driver’s license (CDL) training program is designed to have our students certified and able to drive on the road in just three weeks. We understand that individuals who want to take their next career path in the trucking industry are eager to learn and begin their job as a commercial truck driver. Our training staff is supportive and extremely knowledgeable. They are with our students every step of the way and ensure that they receive the best instruction and direction to prepare them for their careers.
Since 1973, we have been training individuals to receive their commercial driving license, and pursue a career in the trucking industry. Our program includes training hours in the classroom, learning about the mechanics of a truck and laws enforced by the FCMSA, as well as supervised driving hours. We will prepare you to drive tanker vehicles, livestock carriers, dump trucks, passenger vans, hazmat vehicles, and buses. We have included many different aspects to our training program, as well as checkpoints to ensure our students receive the best possible preparation. Some of these include:
- Drug screening and DOT physical exam
- Classroom instruction for sections 1, 2, and 3 of the state CDL Manual
- Instruction of air brakes and combination vehicles
- Preparation on how to take the written CDL test
- Informative lessons on logbooks, service requirements, map reading, and how to plan a trip
- Weight scales and staying legal
- Mechanical knowledge
- Pre-trip inspection information
- Driving range experience such as backing maneuvers, straight line, and offset backing
- Advanced driving skills and highway driving
- Night driving
Class A vs. B Training
At Truck Driver Institute, we offer both Class A and B CDL training. Class A licenses allow for the operation of B and C class vehicles, however, some require additional training.
A Class A CDL is mandatory by law and is what all students are certified with. It is considered the universal CDL. It includes vehicles with a weight of 26,001 or more pounds or a truck with a trailer weight of 10,001 or more pounds.
A Class B CDL includes freight that weighs less than 10,000 pounds with a single axle trailer. This training, along with Class A, is offered at every Truck Driver Institute facility.
Financial Assistance
While most trucking driving schools cost upwards of $8,000. Here at Truck Driver Institute, we allow students to begin with as little as $225 out of pocket. We understand that not everyone has the means to cover all expenses of their training upfront. We want you to realize your potential and never want money to be something that holds you back. This is why our Student Services Department is here to help by coordinating with you to come up with a plan that suits your needs. We offer career education funding which requires little initial expenses, as well as military benefits. Additionally, due to trucking companies being in high demand for drivers, many offer employer tuition assistance and will pay for truck drivers’ education once they are hired.
Rewarding Pay
Not only is a career in trucking a unique and enlightening experience, but it is rewarding as well. Most are not aware of the high starting salaries that truck drivers can earn. Most trucking companies pay between $0.26 and $0.50 per mile. This can add up quickly when driving upwards of 3,000 miles per week. Truck Driver Institute graduates earn $40,000 to $78,000 per year. With truck drivers in high demand, companies like Walmart are raising the salaries of truck drivers and including additional benefits.
Job Placement
At Truck Driver Institute, we are partnered with over 20 trucking companies to ensure graduates are placed with a carrier right after graduation. Many truck driving schools will direct all of their graduates to one or two carriers. However, we understand that is not realistic for all of our students. We want our graduates to have a choice in where they want to work, which is why we have a plethora of options for our graduates. With over 47 years of experience, carriers in the trucking industry know that we train our students to be the best in the business. These companies regularly hire our graduates because they know our graduates have the skills and training to take on any job.
